Ear Wax is produced by glands in the ear canal. Ear wax traps dust and other small particles and prevent them from reaching, and potentially damaging or infecting the eardrum. Normally, the wax dries up and falls out of the ear, along with any trapped dust or debris. Everyone makes ear wax, but the amount and type are genetically determined just like hair color or height. Smaller or oddly shaped ear canals may make it difficult for the naturally occurring wax to get out of the canal and lead to wax impactions.
Blockage, or impaction, also occurs when the wax gets pushed deep within the ear canal. Earwax blockage is one of the most common ear problems that we see at Gurgaon ENT Centre. The most common cause of impactions is the use of ear buds, which can remove superficial wax but also push the rest of the wax deeper into the ear canal. Hearing aid and earplug users are also more prone to earwax blockage.
Ear wax can lead to dimnished hearing, ear pain, feeling of heaviness in ears, ringing sound in the ear or tinnitus and itching or discharge from ear. Ear wax cannot be examined at home hence it is never advisable to put any ear drops just suspecting ear wax. It can infact compund the problem and can even lead to damage of ear drum. Also cleaning ear wax at home is also not advisable neither through quacks who offer to clean the wax with unsterile curretes. This can lead to severe ear pain, injury to ear canal and hole in ear drum, which is medically called perforated ear drum.
There is a saying "If you want to clean your ears, clean them with your elbow". Jist of the saying is don't clean the ear wax on your own because when you try doing it you do it blindly. By doing blindly you tend to push the wax deep inside the ear canal. This leads to complication of simple ear cleaning process.
