Adenoids are glands that are high up in the throat behind the nose and roof of the mouth. These glands can become swollen as they fight off bacteria or viruses. At Gurgaon ENT Centre we have seen that the child may have had enlarged adenoids since birth, or they may have grown too large from repeated infections. Enlarged adenoids can interfere with your child's breathing, especially at night when they are sleeping. Taking out adenoids improves breathing.
Adenoidectomy is the surgical removal of the adenoids which is advised by ENT Surgeon at Gurgaon ENT Centre,India for reasons which include impaired breathing through the nose, chronic infections, or recurrent earaches. The surgery is less commonly performed in adults in whom adenoids are considered vestigial and purposeless. It is most often done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Adenoidectomy is generally performed after the child turns 3. An adenoidectomy is performed by a ENT Surgeon who specializes in ear, nose, and throat surgery. The tonsils and/or adenoids can be removed through the mouth so no additional incisions are made except for where the tissues are removed.
Symptoms of adenoiditis can vary depending on what is causing the infection, but may include:
- Sore Throat
- Stuffy Nose
- Swollen glands in the neck
- Ear pain and other ear problems
- Speaking with a nasal sound, as if you are speaking with a pinched nose
- Difficulty sleeping
- Snoring or sleep apnea (a condition where you stop breathing for a short amount of time during sleep). Parents can look for the symptoms like if the child is generally breathing through mouth, recurrent cough and cold, throat infections or nasal speech. There might also be delay in growth of the child and it might be observed that the child is not gaining weight and is mostly lethargic. If these symptoms are seen then you may be required to see the ENT specialist for further management.
Adenoiditis is treated with antibiotics. However, if patient has frequent infections, including ear and sinus infections, or antibiotics do not help, or if your child has ongoing breathing problems, surgery may be needed to remove the adenoids. This procedure is called an adenoidectomy. Your ENT doctor may also recommend the tonsils be removed at the same time since adenoiditis and tonsillitis often go hand in hand. Surgery to remove the tonsils is called a tonsillectomy. After the surgery patient has to stay atleast one day in the hospital. The surgeon will assess you after the surgery and decide on discharge. At the time of discharge, the surgeon will give you a list of instructions about the Do’s and Dont’s. You will also be scheduled for your next visit at the time of discharge.
