Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. For some it can be minor while for some it can be a major issue and can even become life threatening. At Gurgaon ENT Centre we counsel the patient and make her understand that if asthma is atopic i.e. if it is due to allergy, then it can only be controlled but cannot be cured completely. However there are certain conditions which are not exactly asthma but give symptoms similar to asthma. These can be cured by treating the underlying problem.
Over weight or obese patients do get such symptoms which can be confused with asthma. At Gurgaon ENT Centre we have see that breathlessness can also happen to people with deviated nasal septum. People with deviated septum generally have compromised airway to breathe and when there is infection then the nasal tissues swell up which leads to further reduction in the breathing passage leading to suffocation or asthma like symptoms.
Exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens) can trigger signs and symptoms of asthma. Asthma can be because of any of the following reasons:
- Airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste
- Respiratory infections, such as the common cold
- Physical activity (exercise-induced asthma)
- Air pollutants and irritants, such as smoke
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which stomach acids back up into your throat
- Deviated Nasal Septum
The risk of asthma increases in case you have a sibling who is suffering from asthma or you are a smoker or you are exposed to fumes and smoke. Staying current with vaccinations can prevent flu and pneumonia from triggering asthma flare-ups.
Prevention and long-term control are key in stopping asthma attacks before they start. Treatment usually involves learning to recognize your triggers, taking steps to avoid them and tracking your breathing to make sure your daily asthma medications are keeping symptoms under control. In case of an asthma flare-up, you may need to use a quick-relief inhaler, such as albuterol. The right medications for you depend on a number of things like your age, symptoms, asthma triggers and what works best to keep your asthma under control. Preventive, long-term control medications reduce the inflammation in your airways that leads to symptoms. Quick-relief inhalers (bronchodilators) quickly open swollen airways that are limiting breathing. In some cases, allergy medications are necessary. While in case of nasal blockage due to bone septoplasty surgery is performed to improve the breating passage.
