Cochlear Impant In India

A cochlear implant is a device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the inner ear. Children and adults with a severe to profound hearing loss who cannot be helped with hearing aids may be helped with cochlear implants. The implant consists of an external portion that sits behind the ear and a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin.

Candidates for Cochlear Implant

The decision to receive an implant should involve discussions with medical specialists, including an experienced ENT surgeon. Children and adults can be good candidates for a cochlear implant if they:

Cochlear Implant Vs Hearing Aid

A cochlear implant is very different from a hearing aid. Hearing aids amplify sounds so they may be detected by damaged ears. Cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. Signals generated by the implant are sent by way of the auditory nerve to the brain, which recognizes the signals as sound. Hearing through a cochlear implant is different from normal hearing and takes time to learn or relearn. However, it allows many people to recognize warning signals, understand other sounds in the environment, and enjoy a conversation in person or by telephone.

About 4–6 weeks after surgery, the patient returns to the clinic to be fit with the external parts—the microphone and speech processor—and to activate and program (called mapping) the implant. This initial fitting process is completed over several days and may include additional visits over a few months.

Cochlear Implant Surgery

Use of a cochlear implant requires both a surgical procedure and significant therapy to learn or relearn the sense of hearing. Implant surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts from two to three hours. An incision is made behind the ear to open the mastoid bone leading to the middle ear and then the inner ear is opened and implant electrodes are inserted. A well is created in the skull bone for the placement of the receiver-stimulating system. The procedure requires a stay in the hospital for 7 to 10 days. Antibiotics and other supportive medicines are given to such a patient.

An additional consideration is learning to interpret the sounds created by an implant. This process takes time and practice. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists are frequently involved in this learning process.
